Torremolinos bylo původním místem — rybářskou vesnicí, která se v 50. letech 20. století stala prvním mezinárodním plážovým letoviskem ve Španělsku. Město prošlo několika transformacemi: vrcholem hromadného turismu v 70. a 80. letech, obtížným obdobím v 90. letech a dlouhým, záměrným obdobím regenerace, které obnovilo historickou čtvrť rybářů Carihuela, modernizovalo nábřeží a přeorientovalo město jako otevřenou, rozmanitou destinaci ve střední cenové úrovni.
